Wiseman House Chocolates
BEST BITE: Almond Toffee
Wiseman House Chocolates is a one-of-a-kind chocolate shop located in a turn-of-the-century Victorian home in historic Hico, Texas. Chocolatier Kevin Wenzel and his wife LaDonne started Wiseman House in 1996 after moving back to the area from Dallas. Wiseman House makes every piece of real chocolate by hand, including truffles, fudge, brittle, toffee, ganache, and even sipping chocolate—using the best ingredients available. Wiseman House makes their handmade chocolate in their studio in downtown Hico, and offers chocolate making classes, so check their Facebook page or website for more information on classes and registration. They have been featured in articles by Texas Highways, The Austin Chronicle, Texas Monthly, Texas Hill Country, and on Chet Garner’s The Daytripper. While every bite you have at Wiseman House could be the best bite, Kevin says the Almond Toffee is as good as it gets, made with real butter and real chocolate that melts and tastes as real chocolate should—and with a full rich flavor profile. We couldn’t agree more, but you should also try the Wild Woman Truffles, Dark Chocolate Pecan Caramel Clusters, and Chocolate Dipped Orange Peel. And if that’s not enough, get the Signature Collection which includes a medley of flavors that includes white, milk, and dark chocolate truffles.
Jersey Lilly’s Mexican Restaurant
BEST BITE: Chicken and Beef Fajitas
Jersey Lilly’s Mexican Restaurant in historic downtown Hico, Texas offers Tex-Mex, burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and a full bar. One of the things that makes Jersey Lilly’s unique is the upstairs, complete with a large outdoor patio overlooking downtown, karaoke, and a bar. Grab a fajita chicken salad, some chicken wings and a margarita and hang out on the patio. Or if the Texas heat is too much to bear, dine inside the newly renovated indoor seating area. A Tex-Mex classic, the combination chicken and beef fajitas at Jersey Lilly’s is our best bite, complete with pico de gallo, charro or refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, and tortillas. Other favorites include carne asada tacos, pig wings (fried pork ribs), and their famous queso. Stop by Jersey Lilly’s today for classic Tex-Mex cuisine, friendly service, and a cold drink.

Eis
BEST BITE: Smoked Chicken Salad Sandwich
Eis (pronounced Ice), is a sandwich and ice cream shop in historic downtown Hico, Texas. Eis uses the highest quality ingredients locally sourced for an authentic Texas lunch. From sandwiches, ice cream, salads and homemade sides to craft soda and tea. You can even build your own ice cream sandwich with fresh baked cookies, just don’t forget the sprinkles. Everything at Eis is worth trying, but if we had to pick just one best bite, it would be the house smoked chicken salad sandwich. Owners Wes Lunsford and Jennifer Jones smoke the chicken in-house, and pair it with jalapeno or white sourdough bread, lettuce, tomato, a side of pickles. Sides include chips, Tuscan pasta salad, or baked potato salad. If you’re rolling through town on Friday, the smoked ribeye is a sandwich you just can’t miss out on. Flacas Fitness & Brews
BEST BITE: Guacamole Chicken Melt
"Fun place to grab a fresh pita or pulled pork nachos for lunch or a nice breakfast. Lots of good beers always available and they are always cold. Can’t recommend this place enough."
Jimmy B.
A Reviewer from Tripadvisor
Flacas Fitness and Brews is a restaurant, fitness studio, and art gallery, serving craft beer, fresh sandwiches, salads, wraps, smoothies and more. Owner Linda McDowell teaches yoga classes in the back of the restaurant in an attached yoga studio. In addition to yoga, you can find local art on display in the gallery and event space. On the menu at Flacas you will find a number of healthy but delicious options including a southwest salad, a Greek style gyro, a meaty quesadilla, and so much more. At Flacas, the best bite is the Guacamole Chicken Melt on jalapeno sourdough bread. Made with smoked chicken, melted white cheddar, guacamole, and a drizzle of housemade jalapeno ranch, this sandwich is light while still being hearty, and healthy while still being flavorful. Add a side of chips, a salad, or fresh seasonal fruit and you’re good to go. Just don’t forget the craft beer on tap. Stop by Flacas in historic downtown Hico to pick your best bite.

Lenchaz Taqueria
BEST BITE: Brisket Tacos on Corn Tortillas
Lenchaz Taqueria is a small food trailer dishing out big flavors. Popular with Hico locals and travelers alike, Lenchaz offers breakfast and lunch including tacos, enchiladas, rice bowls, quesadillas and more. Everything at Lenchaz is good, but our best bite is the shredded brisket tacos on corn tortillas. Double wrapped in corn tortillas, the tender brisket tacos come with the standard raw onion and cilantro, or you can customize your toppings. We recommend avocado, cilantro and grilled onions.
