The Chop House

Nestled inside the beautifully restored Midland Hotel in the heart of historic downtown Hico sits The Chop House. At the helm of The Chop House is Chef Eric Hunter and his wife Jennifer Pittman Hunter, formerly of Fire Oak Grill in Weatherford, and La Provence in Louisiana. Eric, Jennifer, and the amazing staff at The Chop House use fresh, high quality ingredients in their refined Texas cuisine. Popular dishes include fresh from the boat Scottish Salmon with house made pasta, beef tenderloin with yukon potato au gratin, and pimento cheese croquettes, just to name a few.
The best bite at The Chop House is honestly anything you get, but if we had to choose one, it would be their weekly fresh seafood feature. Specials have included fresh parmesan crusted trumpeters bass, pan seared, and finished with a lemon caper butter sauce. Or pan seared big eye tuna with a tomato & wild mushroom ragout, garnished with crispy brussels sprouts. Be sure to visit The 1896 Saloon with a full bar including craft cocktails, beer and wine.
2nd Street Bakeshop & Coffee Co.
BEST BITE: 2nd Street Sandwich
2nd Street Bakeshop & Coffee Company is a bakery and coffee shop set in a Victorian home in the heart of downtown Hico. Bakery items are made fresh by hand in-store, and include savory and sweet items. Grab a latte, hot tea, or lemonade and sit out on the front porch swing. Or if you’re in the mood for lunch, they offer hand pies including a veggie calzone, a tuscan hand pie, a cheeseburger hand pie, and more.
For the best bite at 2nd Street, you can’t go wrong with the 2nd street sandwich, a hand pie filled with ham, turkey, pastrami, swiss, cheddar and monterey jack cheese. If you’ve driven through Hico, you know the busiest place in town is Rangler’s Convenience Store. Known for having large, clean restrooms and a great selection of snacks, most people don’t know that they also have a great food menu. Grab a personal pizza to-go from Pizza Inn, or call ahead and order a pizza for family or friends.
Although you can’t go wrong with pizza, our best bite is the quarter pound cheese burger from Cowboy Kitchen. Topped with your choice of lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mustard or mayo, the burger from Cowboy Kitchen is one of Hico’s best kept secrets.
